Curriculum
The Master of Arts in Economics program is designed to prepare a student for a career as a professional economist in government or business. The program also serves as an avenue toward further graduate work in the field of economics. Students may choose to specialize in the department’s strengths in international economics and economic growth or the applied microeconomic areas of health, labor and environmental economics.

Thesis Option
Students who chose the thesis option will take 4 electives (12 hours) and enroll in Econ 799 Thesis Preparation (6 hours). At least half of all course work will be at the 700-800 level (excluding thesis preparation). Two electives (6 hours) may be taken outside of Economics.
Non-Thesis Option
Students who chose the non-thesis option will take 6 electives. At least half of all course work will be at the 700-800 level (excluding thesis preparation). Three electives (9 hours) may be taken outside of Economics.
Comprehensive Exam
Students are required to pass the comprehensive exam which covers the 4 core courses.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is an undergraduate degree in Economics required for admission?
No, students enroll with a variety of academic backgrounds. However, students who do not have an undergraduate degree in business or economics may have to satisfy some additional coursework.
2. How long does it take to complete the M.A. Economics degree program?
Students are required to complete 24 credit hours of coursework, plus 6 hours of thesis preparation or additional electives. This can typically be accomplished in 12-24 months. Required prerequisites can be completed during this period as well.
3. Can the M.A. Economics degree be pursued on a part-time or evening basis?
Yes, it is possible to pursue the degree on a part-time basis. Many of the courses are available in the evening; however, we cannot guarantee that all of the classes can be taken at night. This option works best if you have a flexible work schedule.
4. Is financial aid available?
Yes, federal financial aid is available to students pursuing the MAEcon degree. Their is also a limited amount of Moore School financial assistance available which is awarded on a merit-based system. Students are encouraged to apply as early as possible if interested in being considered for a Moore School financial award.
5. Are international applicants considered for financial aid awards?
Yes, all Moore School financial awards are merit based. International students are not eligible for federal financial aid.
